    No doubt about it the race with Sunday silence and Easy Goer the race of the decade. The first Classic is a close second. Please don't mention Personal Ensign race as top race, they labored home .

    Wow, I'm watching this for the first time and when I got to numbers 4 &3 I'm saying to myself, "are they kidding? Are they going to leave out the Personal Ensign race which I thought was the greatest race in the history of the sport?" Is it because she was a filly? So then I get to number one and realized they left the best for last. Great video!!

    Who put this list together? Only a slight American bias. I don't have enough energy to list the euro horses that have won great Breeders Cup race. Apart from the odd Wesley Ward flyer that wins at Royal Ascot, how many American horses win in Europe? Er,,,,none. As inward looking as ever, our American cousins.

    EVERYTHING was against Easy Goer coming into the 89 Classic and During the 89 Classic and EVERYTHING was in Sunday Silences favor...All the Circumstances and on that Speed favoring track and only coming up Short a Neck at the Wire Closing was very Disappointing...Easy Goer was The Best Horse in that race...He was also training so poorly that the connections debated scratching him as his ankles were flaring up...But how could they ever scratch in such a Big race...Easy Goer was a Very unlucky and unfortunate Horse with all the Talent in the world

    1989 Classic was such a Great Race...Easy Goer had absolutely "Everything" going against him Heading into the race and during the race...Closed to only miss by a "Neck" at the Wire was Very impressive under all the Circumstances...He was the "Best" Horse in the race...Easy Goer is probably the Most Unlucky Great Horse in History...Only "13" days rest heading into Derby and caught a Muddy Surface on same Track he disliked...Pinned on rail Entire stretch in Preakness to come up short a "Nose"...Easy Goer had the Natural Talent to be a Top 5 all time Horse...That Belmont Stakes Performance was just Electrifying...NY was the only state in the Country that did not allow race days drugs also...Connections also Entered him in the Met Mile off only a little over "10" days rest while giving a Ton of weight to rest of Field...Connections were Greedy with Easy Goer trying to Win every NY race possible including a "12" Furlong" event the race before the Classic...They should have Skipped that Race and just let the Horse rest up more heading into Classic...He suffered through career ankle problems...Easy Goer...What could have been...Still had a Great brilliant career though...1989 Gotham Performance should be in a Video Museum somewhere

    McCarron said the 1989 Classic was the 1 Race over all others in his career that he felt "he" Won the Race by using "Tactics" aboard Sunday Silence to get to the Wire 1st...Watching that Race most would agree...Pat Day however thought Easy Goer was going to Win no matter how he rode him and McCarron taught him a very valueable lesson...Pat Day was always Spoiled aboard Easy Goer and never respected any other Horse or Field

    Worst was the 1989 Classic...Worst is because Easy Goer should have won that race as the heavy 1-2 favorite...Pat Day moved up on the back stretch to sit right behind Sunday Silence...Jock under Sunday Silence knows he has to move around the turn with such a short Gulfstream stretch...He makes his move and Pat Day just SITS there aboard Easy Goer and waits and waits instead of moving when Sunday Silence moved...Easy Goer should have been right at Sunday Silences throat latch heading in the stretch...instead Pat Day leaves Easy Goer with so much to do and so much ground to make up in the short stretch and loses by a NECK...Hard to forgive that ride

    Oh remember when the Breeder's Cup was meant to be a meeting of champions? Remember when they had to overcome a new track or mud or cold? Remember when they didn't run nearly every year at Santa Anita.... So many of these moments took place over off tracks, champions are meant to overcome all odds not just win because it's what is expected. A depressing end to what could have been the scene of some of the greatest racing the world has ever seen.

      I think we just had 2 yrs. Churchill, 1 Keenland, with a Santa Anita, somewhere in between. Funny Keenland was a gorgeous warm day last year, had a cold winter storm in the west. But just BV the time of year, it shod be out west 3 of 4. Monmouth was a swamp, so was lone stars turf course. Churchill muddy about 50%

    "Sunday Silence holds on and he wins by a desperate neck." Seriously? This comment bothers me every single goddamned time I hear it. Had he held on by a desperate neck, he would've crossed the finish line being whipped until he reached the finish line, really giving his all. It's obvious that SS's jockey just let him go home in a hand ride and Easy Goer plainly and simply couldn't get to him.

    • @timgregory2393
      @timgregory2393 8 років тому

      Easy Goer passed him after the wire. Therefore, you could say that the lead was "desperate" because Easy Goer would have won if the line was moved back 30 feet.

    • @the-golden-paw9759
      @the-golden-paw9759 8 років тому

      Tim Gregory Of course Easy Goer would have passed him eventually, but Sunday Silence's jockey didn't push him to any more than that neck. He could have held on by - let's say - a length or so, too. It's not just a "desperate neck", it's more a "desperate whatsoever the jockey knows he's got it, but a couple meters more and they fade".

      +C-Fox SS officially won driving - officially by DRF (Racing Form). Driving in the DRF glossary defintions means strong urging by the rider. The official margin was a neck in this race. Clearly, it was a very rapidly diminishing neck, as Easy Goer blew by at the wire. The official DRF chart notes SS won "driving" (strong urging). McCarron was told not to hit the horse by his trainer due to his disdain for being whipped (as well as weaving tendencies) - though in some races like the Preakness & Belmont SS handled being whipped ok. But what did he do for it to be driving (strong urging)? He was repeatedly & continuously asking him (driving - strong urging) to run by throwing crosses (flicking & swooping with the reins, cross reining), and poking him (as McCarron said in the Blood Horse Nov. 11, 1989 and LA Times Nov. 5, 1989 articles) on his shoulder, and showing him the whip with his left hand. McCarron stated the horse was running all out at his top speed and doing the best he could & he was just trying to keep him straight as well - because he was lugging in a bit as well. McCarron said, "He was running FULL OUT for the last three sixteenths of a mile (which in the entire home stretch at Gulfstream). Easy Goer was really flying the last eighth." Hence, as he said, the poking him on the left shoulder, the showing him the whip on the left side, and the throwing crosses, cross reining, and the flicking and swooping with the reins. In the 1989 Belmont, Day actually did whip EG a few times at the top of the stretch, then hand rode him the entire last eighth of a mile while widening to win by 8 lengths. The chart noted he won ridden out in the Belmont. Ridden out (1989 Belmont) is much less vigorous riding than the strong urging of driving (1989 BCC). I am not even going to get into the ride by Pat Day in the BCC, which was very similar to Pat Day rides on Forty Niner (1988 Derby), Seeking the Gold (1988 Travers, BCC, & Haskell), Menifee (1999 Derby), Timber Country (1995 Derby), Turkoman (1986 BCC), Surfside (1999 BC Juv Fillies), Heavenly Prize (1994 BC Distaff), Java Gold (1987 JCGC) , and many others.

    Whever compiled this wasn't in Florida in 1989. The whole city of Ft. Lauderdale was talking about the race between Easy Goer and Sunday Silence. You'd get on a bus and the driver would say, "Who do you like?" Standing in a line at a drug store somebody would ask the same thing. There were banners everywhere and when Easy Goer began to make his move like Neil Diamond sang, "the whole valley would shake." It was by far the most-anticipated B.C. race in the events history. But, again, if you weren't there you have no idea of what it was like--and I've been to a bunch of these things. Hell, even Pebbles winning the turf race in 1985 at Aqueduct was more exciting and remarkable than some of these.
